GraeBush's News

After taking in all the advice from the playtest, I officially released 19-Forty Hell (v0.1) today. I made this game exclusively for Newgrounds. I learned to let go of perfection on this one. I felt I could have worked 3 months on this and still want to keep adding to it. I tried to keep it simple, and that was a big learning experience for me. I can say, I am proud of this one. Took my time and kept at this until it was juuuust right.

Changes made to game after playtesting:

  • Shortened the levels length 50%.
  • Nerfed Boss 1 + 2
  • Removed Crashing/Burning dropping planes from Hell Mode
  • Increased movement speed 5%
  • Increased difficulty of Level 3, while decreasing difficulty for Level 2

Thank you Ralix for the API help!

Changes made from V0.1 => V0.2 (Updated 16 Oct 21)

  • Added Option to Toggle Clouds On/Off to help reduce lag
  • Fixed Mobile Fire button freezing the respawn.
  • Fixed bug causing Player respawning issue. Works perfect now.
  • Fixed Scoreboard (Second Update)

Well... September really flew by. Soon it will be Christmas before we know it... My injury is healing up nicely, but I am still mainly one armed. Hopefully by the end of November I should be much further along and more back to normals. That just means I have more time to work on some goodies for the next 2 months.

September Recap

This month of September was a good one, it was the beginning of my journey and one of the first times I was able to start making personal projects, without being in tutorial purgatory. Taking chances and learning from trail by fire has been a great experience so far.

I have been splitting my time between courses and sitting down with personal projects. It has been working out well so far, but I have been noticing that I need to apply myself and finish up this vertical shooter. I am enjoying to process and taking my time while trying to meet the middle ground of my perfectionist ways. I want to finish this game up this week and quickly move on to start my desired plans for a Halloween game to be released in October as well.

The mini challenge game was fun to make but I was restricted. I will do one or two of those a month for practice, this month you got that Batty Feed Frenzy.

This vertical shooter game is majority complete, I am just last minute fine tweaking through playtesting and reading up on specific level design documents for the genre, as I want to turn out something half decent. I must say, I am VERY HAPPY how it is turning out. - Teaser GIFS are becoming WEBP here all the sudden. Video Link -

Finishing touches are under way, last thing really left besides level improvements, is to make sure the Newgrounds API works with Metals unlocking, may end up removing this feature, but I am trying it out this week. Giving myself to finish this up by October 1st-3rd. Playtesting is underway...

Upcoming plans for October

  • For the next one, this Halloween game I spoke of, I may end up doing a Gameboy, monochromatic game in Orange in that 256x144 aspect for practice making that true retro aesthetic... But most likely will bail on the art idea and go normal, if I cant get the art right.

  • I may do a Game jam this month, or at least do two more mini challenges like I did with my first release.

  • Mainly plan on continuing down my learning path and maintaining discipline.

In my last post I did mention that I am trying to have it done before the weekend... Seeing how it is now Monday, I am still chipping away at it. I have most of it done, just playtesting and adding the finishing touched before release later this week.

Added Mobile Controls this time too.

Got a solid game loop for my next release. It will be a vertical shooter, remix of 1942 and a bullet hell. Should have this coming out later this week, hopefully before the weekend. Setting the post for accountability and for myself to not be a perfectionist and release something. I may attempt to apply this Newground API Unity asset in C# I just found and get a highscore and metals integrated(shout out @ OviManic), may end up releasing it first before attempting all that.

Here is a sneak peak:

Hey! Just recently made the decision to start back up game dev and give back to the community. Not looking to make any money, sell a product, start a kickstarter or trying to take clicks away from Newgrounds in anyway. Simply put, I am looking to give as much back to the community as I received (+20 years ago). More in the mentality of how can I serve you all, rather than how can you serve me.

Trying to learn through practice, so making as many games as I can and will only post the ones I feel are fun or engaging enough.

I originally set out to try and stray away from the easy and cheap "sex sells" type of games for clicks, but I am noticing that it is not easy for an Everyone rated game to escape what is referred to as the judgement-hell. Every adult game posted seems to breeze out of judgement quickly.

Understandably, I am very realistic about starting out and appreciate the few views and plays on anything I put a good amount of time into. I guess what I am trying to ask is:

  • What type of games would anyone reading this be interested in? Is there something missing that you would like to see?
  • Should I stay true to my Everyone only games, or should I lose that idea quickly, especially on a site like this? I would want the games to speak for themselves, but is a simple sprite swap to something more provocative going to bring in the plays and feedback more consistently?
