New Dev Here, Looking for advice on how to survive on Newgrounds

Posted by GraeBush - September 7th, 2021

Hey! Just recently made the decision to start back up game dev and give back to the community. Not looking to make any money, sell a product, start a kickstarter or trying to take clicks away from Newgrounds in anyway. Simply put, I am looking to give as much back to the community as I received (+20 years ago). More in the mentality of how can I serve you all, rather than how can you serve me.

Trying to learn through practice, so making as many games as I can and will only post the ones I feel are fun or engaging enough.

I originally set out to try and stray away from the easy and cheap "sex sells" type of games for clicks, but I am noticing that it is not easy for an Everyone rated game to escape what is referred to as the judgement-hell. Every adult game posted seems to breeze out of judgement quickly.

Understandably, I am very realistic about starting out and appreciate the few views and plays on anything I put a good amount of time into. I guess what I am trying to ask is:

  • What type of games would anyone reading this be interested in? Is there something missing that you would like to see?
  • Should I stay true to my Everyone only games, or should I lose that idea quickly, especially on a site like this? I would want the games to speak for themselves, but is a simple sprite swap to something more provocative going to bring in the plays and feedback more consistently?

Welcome to Newgrounds!Well,if you ask me,I’m fine with any game genre, haha but if you like a better idea, you can take a look at the game section to see the hot new content gamers are after here.
As for the second question, you should go for it and try creating more mature content as a way of challenging and improving yourself.I’m not sure about the sprites but if the other features and designs of your game are great,I guess it could work but again,a look at other peoples’ content or posting this in the forums could better answer your question.

Good luck!

Thank you for the welcome! I greatly appreciate the advice.

@MchectorII @GraeBush Your welcome! If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask!

My best advice is this, and this is coming from recent experience as well! If you want to share your games here on Newgrounds, having a good understanding JavaScript and knowing how to integrate Newgrounds’ API into your game will help you a ton! Not much a necessity mind you, but from what I’ve seen, people here tend invest more time in games if said games have API assets like medals and scores. If you already have a great understanding of JavaScript and API implementation, then you’re off to a good start!

And despite this site having a ton of mature/adult-rated games here, the games that actually gains more attraction here are the Everyone/Teen games since they are more promotable, to say the least, so you wouldn’t have much trouble if you already make E rated game.

Outstanding advice! It means a lot to receive this type of help, thank you! I will be adding Java and that API into the learning plan now.
